Barbadillo Prison is a prison facility located in Lima, Peru administered by the National Penitentiary Institute. Known as the "presidential prison" for being the place of detention of the former presidents , it has hosted former presidents Alberto Fujimori and Ollanta Humala .
In 1997, the prison was intervened by the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) through Supreme Decree No. 005-96, which also reorganised the inmates' classification. [2] A resolution published on July 17, 2006, transferred control of the prison to INPE. Despite the prison's capacity for 450 inmates, it suffered from overcrowding. [3]
The penitentiary was built between 1856 and 1860, by order of President Ramón Castilla due to the lack of a prison system in the country. It was inaugurated in 1862. [ 1 ] After a study carried out by Mariano Paz Soldán, the construction of the building was arranged by architects Michele Trefogli and Maximiliano Mimey. [ 2 ]
