The Mann site (12 Po 2) is located in Posey County, Indiana, near the confluence of the Wabash and Ohio rivers. Because of the scale and complexity of the earthworks, it is thought to have had a larger population than Hopewell sites in Ohio, and may be the largest site of this era in all the Midwest. [ 8 ]
Excavations found pottery sherds and a corner notched projectile point, among other artifacts. The archaeologists dug several other 20- to 30-foot trenches, all with vertical faces. The next 30- to 40-foot trench dug revealed the log-lined East Tomb and several artifacts; the team built a roof overhead to protect the site as excavations continued.
The artifacts were reburied in 1994 without proper scientific study at the insistence of out-of-state Native American groups. The marginalization of local Indian group wishes and the loss of rare and significant artifacts caused a second round of controversy.
