The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) was an international trade union.It came into being on 7 December 1949 following a split within the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), and was dissolved on 31 October 2006 when it merged with the World Confederation of Labour (WCL) to form the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
The organisation was founded in 2007, at a congress in Accra, with the merger of the ICFTU African Regional Organisation and the World Confederation of Labour's Democratic Organization of African Workers' Trade Union. [1]
In 1965, the ICFTU's secretariat placed the organisation under the direct control of the ICFTU General Secretary, and it did not regain its autonomy until 1972. At that year's congress, F. T. Tekie of Ethiopia was elected as General Secretary of AFRO, but he was arrested in 1974. [1] but the current organisation was not fully formed until 1993. [1]
The Ghana Trades Union Congress is a national centre that unites various workers' organizations in Ghana. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The organization was established in 1945. [ 2 ]
In 1999, the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) was established as an umbrella organization for several independent trade unions. In 2003 a tripartite National Labour Commission was created to help resolve disputes.
In June 2006 an American labor magazine, Labor Notes, documented the role that the ORIT, ICFTU, ILO, and the AFL-CIO played in supporting elements opposed to the government of Haitian leader Aristide.
