I disagree that this is the standard, or at least that it is the de facto standard. M9 is the designation used by the military; Beretta is nowhere in its name. Other examples: M249 light machine gun (U.S. variant of the FN Minimi), M16 rifle (military AR-15), M14 rifle, etc.
