Mjini Magharibi Region, Zanzibar Urban West Region or West Zanzibar Region (Mkoa wa Mjini Magharibi in Swahili) is one of the 31 regions of Tanzania. The region covers an area of 230 km 2 (89 sq mi). [ 4 ]
It is bordered to the north by the Zanzibar North Region, to the east by the Zanzibar Central/South Region, to the south by Kiwani Bay, and to the west by the Zanzibar Urban District. As of 2002 Census, the population of the Zanzibar West District was 184,204, but by the 2012 Census it had more than doubled to 370,645 [1] [2]
The city is the largest on the island of Zanzibar. It is located on the west coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, north of the much larger city of Dar es Salaam across the Zanzibar Channel. The city also serves as the capital of the Zanzibar Urban/West Region. In 2022 its population was 219,007. [4]
In 2002, around two-thirds of the people, 622,459, lived on Unguja (Zanzibar Island), with most settled in the densely populated west. Besides Zanzibar City, other towns on Unguja include Chaani, Mbweni, Mangapwani, Chwaka, and Nungwi. Outside of these towns, most people live in small villages and are engaged in farming or fishing. Unguja and the surrounding islands are divided into three regions: Zanzibar Central/ South (capital: Koani), Zanzibar North (capital: Mkokotoni) and; Zanzibar Urban/ West (capital: Zanzibar City). Unguja belongs to Zanzibar, which is defined by the Tanzanian Constitution as "a part" of Tanzania with a high degree of autonomy.
