The 128th Infantry Regiment ("Les Terribles" [1]) is a United States military unit of the Wisconsin National Guard, currently represented by the 1st Battalion, 128th Infantry Regiment. The 128th has served as part of the American Civil War, Spanish–American War, Mexican Civil War, World War I, World War II, Iraq War and the Afghanistan War.
Called the State Militia until 1879, the Wisconsin National Guard was appointed by the first adjutant general of the Wisconsin Territory in 1839. The Wisconsin National Guard consists of the Wisconsin Army National Guard and the Wisconsin Air National Guard. It is a part of the Government of Wisconsin under the control of the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs. The Wisconsin National Guard dates back to 1848 when it was commissioned by the State as the "Wisconsin State Militia".
The 127th Infantry was reconstituted in the National Guard per the terms of the National Defense Act of 1920 in 1921, assigned to the 32nd Division, and allotted to the state of Wisconsin. The regiment was reorganized and federally recognized on 1 April 1921 with the headquarters at Oconto, Wisconsin .
The department oversees the Wisconsin Army National Guard, the Wisconsin Air National Guard, Wisconsin Emergency Management, and, when organized, the Wisconsin State Defense Force. The department headquarters are located at 2400 Wright Street, in Madison, on the grounds of the Dane County Regional Airport.
On 10 August 1962 the entire 32nd Division was released from federal service and returned to Wisconsin where they once again reverted to the Wisconsin Army National Guard.
