The first public high school in Biddeford was established in 1848. The building for the high school was erected on Washington Street close to the city's downtown. The former St. Joseph's School is set in a residential area a few blocks south of Biddeford's central business district, on the north side of Birch Street, between Alfred and Graham Streets. It is a large 3-1/2 story brick building with a rectangular footprint and a full fourth story under a tall mansard roof.
The church was dedicated in 1883. The building is also known for its stained-glass windows, organ, art, and size. The church also had its own school, St. Joseph's School. The school was later merged, along with other schools, to the existing Saint James School, which is the only Catholic School under the Good Shepherd Parish. [4]
