Rim Drive is a scenic highway in Crater Lake National Park in southern Oregon, United States. It is a 33-mile (53 km) loop that follows the caldera rim around Crater Lake.Due to its unique engineering and the surrounding park landscape, the drive was listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
Ride the Rim is challenging, with the typical route covering roughly 25 miles with 3,500 feet of climbing at elevations over 7,000 feet.
At Fort Klamath, the byway joins OR 62 and continues north for 16 miles (26 km), where it turns onto Munson Valley Road and enters Crater Lake National Park. At this point, the road becomes Rim Drive, a 33-mile (53 km) loop that follows the caldera rim around Crater Lake. At Merriam Point, Rim Drive splits and turns north.
Eight miles east of Union Creek, the highway enters Crater Lake National Park, and runs through the park for 18 miles (29 km). OR 62 does not get close to the lake itself; an access road midway through the park provides a route to the rim of the lake. After the access road, the highway turns south.
During the winter, the road up to Rim Village is normally plowed but Rim Drive is closed. According to the Köppen climate classification system, Crater Lake National Park has a dry-summer subarctic climate (Dsc). The plant hardiness zone at the lake is 6b with an average annual extreme minimum air temperature of −3.7 °F (−19.8 °C). [7]
Crater Lake Institute Director and limnologist Owen Hoffman states that "Crater Lake is the deepest, when compared on the basis of average depth among lakes whose basins are entirely above sea level. The average depths of Lakes Baikal and Tanganyika are deeper than Crater Lake; however, both have basins that extend below sea level." [19] [21]
Crater Lake lies inside a caldera created 7,700 years ago when the 12,000 feet (3,658 m) high Mount Mazama collapsed following a large volcanic eruption. Over the following millennium, the caldera was filled with rain water forming today's lake. [4] The Klamath Indians revered Crater Lake for its deep blue waters. In 1853, three gold miners ...
