The Aroostook County Historical and Art Museum is located at 109 Main Street, in the White Memorial Building, in Houlton, Maine. The museum was founded in 1937, after the building, a handsome 1903 Colonial Revival house, was donated to the town by the White family. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. [1]
The original path of the road near the Houlton Airport did not turn around what is now the north–south runway, instead going straight on what is now Old Woodstock Road, over the eventual path of the runway, and crossing Airport Drive just south of the exit, meeting at the old U.S. Customs station, 200 yards (180 m) due south of the current one.
A road linking Houlton to Woodstock has existed since at least 1927. [5] It was numbered Route 5 in 1938. In 1951, this designation was removed. [6] [7] The current Route 95 was constructed in the late 1970s and numbered Route 95 by 1981. [8] The new highway bypassed the original alignment of Route 5, [4] which is now numbered Route 555.
The Blackhawk Putnam Tavern is an historic house at 22 North Street in Houlton, Maine, United States. Built in 1813, it is the oldest standing building in Aroostook County . In the mid-19th century, it served as a tavern on the military road, and one of its owners was Blackhawk Putnam, a veteran of the American Civil War .
The Cary Library is the public library of Houlton, Maine, US. It is located at 107 Main Street, in an architecturally distinguished building designed by John Calvin Stevens. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. [1] The library opened on October 12, 1904. [2]
John Holmes (March 14, 1773 – July 7, 1843) was an American politician. He served as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts and was one of the first two U.S. senators from Maine . Holmes was noted for his involvement in the Treaty of Ghent .
