Alfred Beckley (1802–88) said that he named the county for Sir Walter Raleigh (1552–1618), the "enterprising and far-seeing patron of the earliest attempts to colonize our old Mother State of Virginia". Between Bluefield and Beckley, US 19 has been largely supplanted by Interstate 77 (I-77) and the West Virginia Turnpike. Between Prosperity and northeast of Canfield , the route serves as a major southwest–northwest artery as Corridor L of the Appalachian Development Highway System (ADHS).
