BSU was founded in 1919 and opened under the name "Bemidji State Normal School". The first president, Manfred Deputy, was appointed to run the new institution, [5] and the first class consisted of 38 students. The name was changed to "Bemidji State Teachers College" in 1921, then shortened to "Bemidji State College" in 1957.
BSU has two satellite campuses, 15 colleges and a graduate school. It also runs an open university. These units offer graduate and undergraduate degree programs in agriculture, forestry, teacher's education, nursing, physical sciences and the arts. Some units offer non-degree programs and short courses. [8]

Bemidji State Hockey Arena - Sanford Center. The Bemidji State men's ice hockey program began in 1946. From the inaugural 1946-47 season through the 1966-67 season BSU played as an independent member of Division I. [2] In 1968 the team became a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). [2]
BSU started operations in 2003 at the campus of then Kakoba National Teacher's College (KNTC) in the western Ugandan city of Mbarara. [6] KNTC ceased operations at the end of 2005, and in 2006, BSU took over the premises and grounds previously occupied by the teachers' college. [7] In 2006, BSU held its maiden graduation ceremony.
