Born in Heathman, Mississippi in 1894, Lee spent most of his life in Memphis, Tennessee. Lee received numerous citations for his benevolence and civic initiatives.

The glass topped casket that was used for Till's Chicago funeral was found in a cemetery garage in 2009. Till had been reburied in a different casket after being exhumed in 2005. [31] Till's family decided to donate the original casket to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American Culture and History, where it is now on display. [32]
