  2. Distributed control system - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_control_system

A distributed control system (DCS) is a computerized control system for a process or plant usually with many control loops, in which autonomous controllers are distributed throughout the system, but there is no central operator supervisory control. This is in contrast to systems that use centralized controllers; either discrete controllers ...

  3. Industrial control system - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_control_system

The boundaries between DCS and SCADA/PLC systems are blurring as time goes on. [9] The technical limits that drove the designs of these various systems are no longer as much of an issue. Many PLC platforms can now perform quite well as a small DCS, using remote I/O and are sufficiently reliable that some SCADA systems actually manage closed ...

  4. Industrial process control - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_process_control

A programmable logic controller (PLC, for smaller, less complex processes) or a distributed control system (DCS, for large-scale or geographically dispersed processes) analyzes this sensor data transmitted to it, compares it to predefined setpoints using a set of instructions or a mathematical model called the control algorithm and then, in ...

  5. SCADA - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCADA

It refers to the computer and software responsible for communicating with the field connection controllers, which are RTUs and PLCs, and includes the HMI software running on operator workstations. In smaller SCADA systems, the supervisory computer may be composed of a single PC, in which case the HMI is a part of this computer.

  6. Automation - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automation

DCS – Distributed control system; HMI – Human machine interface; RPA – Robotic process automation; SCADA – Supervisory control and data acquisition; PLC – Programmable logic controller; Instrumentation; Motion control; Robotics; Host simulation software (HSS) is a commonly used testing tool that is used to test the equipment software ...

  7. Process control network - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Process_control_network

Determinacy involves assuring that each device is guaranteed access to the network, and in many cases mechanisms to allow priority information (such as alarms) through the system. Compatibility allows SCADA and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) from various manufacturers to communicate with control and measurement equipment from others.

  8. Fieldbus - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fieldbus

Profibus PA (process automation) is used for communication between measuring and process instruments, actuators and process control system or PLC/DCS in process engineering. Profibus PA is a Profibus version with physical layer suitable for process automation, in which several segments (PA segments) with field instruments can be connected to ...

Sorry the reference to SCADA and 'an HMI' destroys the argument that they are the same thing. A DCS is based on top down methodology with single point of engineering as a given; therefore the HMI is not a separate entity; nor is the database etc. The biggest difference lies in the design philosophy : top down or bottom up.
