Stellenbosch is the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest extant university in Sub-Saharan Africa, which received full university status in 1918. [5] Stellenbosch University designed and manufactured Africa's first microsatellite, SUNSAT , launched in 1999.
The 2015 South African Athletics Championships was the year's edition of the national championship in outdoor track and field for South Africa. It was held on 17–18 April at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch. It served as the selection meeting for South Africa at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics.
The stadium played host to several games of the Varsity Cup, South Africa's premier inter-university rugby tournament since 2008. In the first three years of the Varsity Cup (2008–2010) the final also took place at the stadium.
