Hostetter is a census-designated place [3] located in Unity Township, Westmoreland County in the state of Pennsylvania, United States. It is located near Pennsylvania Route 981 . As of the 2010 census [ 4 ] the population was 740 residents.
Hostetter moved from Hanover, Pennsylvania, to New Lisbon, Ohio, in 1820 or 1822. He operated the Union House, a hotel there. In 1824, he moved to Canton. [1] [2] Hostetter was judge of the court of common pleas for several years. [2] He served as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1837 to 1838.
Together with his father, he developed the Hostetter's "Celebrated" Bitters. [2] [3] [4] Shortly after, he became associated with George W. Smith and started the company, Hostetter & Smith; it later became known as Hostetter & Co. [1] The bitters was used as patent medicine by Northern soldiers during the Civil War and served in saloons.
