Royal Air Force Ballykelly, or more simply RAF Ballykelly, is a former Royal Air Force station which opened in 1941 in Ballykelly, County Londonderry. It closed in 1971 when the site was handed over to the British Army as Shackleton Barracks .
20 May 1961 Shackleton MR.1A WB818 had an accident on the ground at RAF Gan, it was flown to RAF Seletar and withdrawn from use. 20 October 1961 Shackleton MR.2 WR968 crashed at RAF Ballykelly and destroyed by fire. [1] 15 May 1962 Shackleton MR.1 VP294 damaged beyond repair landing at RAF Gan.
The site formerly known as RAF Ballykelly was handed over to the British Army as Shackleton Barracks on 2 June 1971. [1] Battalion HQ and HQ Company of the 5th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment arrived there shortly after the barracks opened.

In January 1968, the RAF announced the base was to close and after a delay due to the late introduction of the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod to the RAF inventory, the last Shackleton left on 31 March 1971. The base was handed over to the British Army on 2 June 1971, when it re-opened as Shackleton Barracks .
