Ten Mile originated in a small community at the cross of Old Ten Mile and Ten Mile roads, which is next to Ten Mile Creek. The community consisted of a small school, a post office and two churches. The town has now moved closer to Watts Bar Lake. The only things that still exist in the old community are the two churches.

Warren County was created in 1807 from a portion of White County, and named for Joseph Warren (1741–1775), a militiaman and major general in the American Revolution. [1] The revised Tennessee State Constitution of 1834 stated that no new county could be within 12 miles (19 km) of the county seat of the county from which it was formed.
SR 287 now becomes Great Falls Road and continues east to pass through Rock Island State Park, where it passes by the Great Falls Dam and crosses the mouth of the Collins River, before entering the community of Rock Island and come to an end at an intersection with SR 136 (Rock Island Road). The entire route of SR 287 is a two-lane highway.
