The school was known as Southwest Missouri State until 2005 when they changed the name to Missouri State. Missouri State's first football team was fielded in 1909 and the first coach in program history was Walter Langston who went 4–2 in his only season as head coach. Prior to 1923, the team competed as an Independent.

The 2024 Missouri State Bears football team will represent Missouri State University as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) during the 2024 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Bears are led by second-year head coach Ryan Beard and will play home games at Robert W. Plaster Stadium located in Springfield, Missouri .
The Bears are an NCAA Division I college baseball program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. They began competing in Division I in 1983 and joined the Missouri Valley Conference in 1991 after seven seasons with the Mid-Continent Conference .
