Jasper County is located in the southwest portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 122,761. [1] Its county seat is Carthage, [2] and its largest city is Joplin. The county was organized in 1841 and named for William Jasper, a hero of the American Revolutionary War.
Missouri Southern State University was founded in 1937 as Joplin Junior College. [3] At its conception, Joplin Junior College had 114 students and only 9 faculty members. In 1964, residents of Jasper County, Missouri approved a $2.5 million bond issue to begin construction on a new campus, where the university is currently located.
