When Covington Catholic High School implemented a modular schedule in 1968, it also extended off-campus privileges to all students, encouraging them to visit community institutions such as libraries. However, the policy proved controversial; after a change in management, the school limited off-campus privileges to seniors in good standing.
Covington High School was the sole high school for Covington City in the Alleghany Highlands, and was one of the smallest high schools in Virginia at the time of the 2023 merger. Unlike most larger school districts whose high schools enroll 9th-12th graders, Covington held students from the 8th grade through 12th grade.
It was created on July 1, 2023, when Alleghany County and Covington City merged their two school systems due to declining attendance. [ 2 ] The system consists of approximately 2,700 students across six schools, of which there are four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.
The school district dates back to 1874 and has always maintained a rich, historical tradition. A portion of the 1912 Bradford schoolhouse still stands at one of our current high school sites, which opened in 1933. The remainder of the district's existing schools were built primarily in the 1960s and 1970s.

Coaches. Joseph "Jack" Salter - LHSAA Hall of Fame head football coach, Jack Salter, was head coach at Covington High from 1963 to 1995. [5] During his thirty-three seasons at the school, he compiled a 256–110–8 record and won fifteen district championships, won a state championship in 1976 along with state runners-up in 1975 and 1987.
Covington High School is a public high school in Covington, Ohio. It is the only high school in the Covington Exempted Village School District. Their teams are nicknamed the Buccaneers, or Buccs, while their basketball mascot is Buccy the Buccaneer.
