On March 26, 2024, Caltrans District 9 proposed the Ridgecrest-Inyokern Pavement Project, rehabilitating 24 lane miles of SR 178 from PM 88.6 in Kern County to PM 104.6 at the San Bernardino County line. The purpose of the project is to preserve existing pavement and improve ride quality.
