16:9 is a widescreen aspect ratio with a width of 16 units and height of 9 units. Once seen as an "exotic" aspect ratio, [ 1 ] since 2009, it has become the most common aspect ratio for televisions and computer monitors , and is also the universal standard image format for the universal 1080p , 2160p and 4320p formats.
These may also use other aspect ratios by cropping otherwise black bars at the top and bottom which result from cinema aspect ratios greater than 16∶9, such as 1.85 or 2.35 through 2.40 (dubbed "Cinemascope", "21∶9" etc.), while the standard horizontal resolution, e.g. 1920 pixels, is usually kept.

They are mostly used in smartphones or phablets and do not have established names, but may be subsumed under the umbrella term ultra-wide (full) HD .
