The black drum was first formally described as Labrus cromis by Carl Linnaeus in 1766 with one of its type localities given as Carolina. In 1801 the Bernard Germain de Lacépède described a new species, Pogonias fasciatus, without giving a type locality but it is thought to be Charleston, South Carolina, [2] and placed it a new monospecific genus, Pogonias.

[1] Saltwater fish are very commonly kept in aquariums for entertainment. Many saltwater fish are also caught to be eaten, [2] [3] or grown in aquaculture.
Generally shallow-water fish, tilefish are usually found at depths of 50–200 m in both temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. All species seek shelter in self-made burrows, caves at the bases of reefs , or piles of rock, often in canyons or at the edges of steep slopes.
