A Uniform Mark Scale, or UMS, is a way of standardising the marking of papers across different examination boards, allowing someone to compare two marks marked by two different examination boards. Grades are then calculated using grade boundaries set at particular UMS scores.
For example, an English department in a high school could develop a media literacy presentation for the grade 9 culminating activity worth 10% of the students' final grade. The other 20% of the students' grade will be demonstrated with a written examination responding and applying a literary analysis to a sight-passage.
Another policy commonly used by 4.0-scale schools is to mimic the eleven-point weighted scale (see below) by adding a .33 (one-third of a letter grade) to honors or advanced placement class. The AMC 8 is a 25 multiple-choice question, 40-minute competition designed for middle schoolers. [4] No problems require the use of a calculator, and their use has been banned since 2008. Since 2022, the competition has been held in January. The AMC 8 is a standalone competition; students cannot qualify for the AIME via their AMC 8 score alone.
