I will be replacing the drain assembly on our tub & shower during a remodel. Planned on using a PVC, sched 40 drain assembly. While have coffee yesterday, fellow that works for a plumber said that his boss "never puts PVC in" when he can use brass!
Does anyone know of an online supply where I can order a 2 inch bathtub drain. I'm working on a 1940 house and need to replace the tub drain assembly. The old drain is a 2 inch (yes I'm sure). I can get a 1 1/2 to just cover and seat, but I would rather replace with a 2 inch. Problem is I cant find one. Thx for the help.
Crane Bathtub Waste Assembly Some older bathtub waste assemblies have the linkage inside the overflow and the bathtub shoe that are an integral part of it, this might be the case. Usually a 1/4" snake cable will by-pass the linkage and jump the trap to properly clean the drain line.
I am renovating a house built in the early '40s and it has probably the original cast iron tub w/ probably replacement Sayco faucet and probably original "Standard" drain and overflow. The drain is my problem - it does not close. It is an odd design in that there is a rod that runs horizontally through the pipe below the drain opening. See photo.
I am in the home stretch of a bathroom model. A plumber roughed-in the supply/drain lines and set the tub. I had a slightly larger/taller than standard tub. He did a good job, but when he left he showed me how the waste and overflow drain that I had purchased worked, but the stopper did not go deep enough to block the drain.
NOTE: Drain/overflow assembly should be sized for 16 1/2” (41.91 cm) deep bathtub. ! Plumber’s putty will degrade bathtub material. Do not use plumber’s putty to seal between drain and bathtub. Use latex/acrylic sealant or a gasket." So nowhere does it say goop it up with the latex/acrylic sealant so that it seals those two layers.
drain 1. If you did the assembly correctly there would be no leaks even if the tub filled up because of a plugged drain. 2. Silicone will be very messy and will just cover up any poor connections. 3. That slight offset will not cause the leak, but it could make it difficult to extract the drain sealing plug. 4.
We had no access either from underneath. He measured, measured and measured the entire bath drain assembly. Soldered it on and then lowered the tub in. He did it and I was amazed. I was able to lift the plywood from under the floor but it was about 3 feet away. We filled the tub and watched it drain from the panel.
I removed the face plate and there was no part of an old linkage assembly behind it except a cotter pin left over. I stuck a coat hanger down in the hole and could fish out nothing, although I did get the coat hanger stuck for a few heart-stopping seconds. This morning I bought a Danco tub drain linkage assembly at Home Depot.
Showed pics to local plumber (whose dad originally put the bathroom in the house in 1952/53) and he thought with the lever mechanism seized up it would be best to replace the drain assembly with a good quality new setup. They had to order the parts and I'm waiting on them to get here, but got the old stuff all removed.
