There are at least 183 parks maintained by Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation , many of which are in unincorporated areas of the county.
Fountain at Valhalla Memorial Park. The cemetery was taken over by the state of California. It is unclear how long the state owned the 63-acre (250,000 m 2) cemetery, but Pierce Brothers bought it in 1950 and, within two years, closed the rotunda to vehicle traffic and moved the entry to the cemetery from Valhalla Drive in Burbank to Victory and Cahuenga boulevards in North Hollywood.
The Verdugo Mountains have been subject to repeated wildfires in historical times. Major occurrences in the twentieth century include the December, 1927 Burbank Canyon Fire, which started in Haines Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains and burned south into the range, consuming approximately 100 homes in Burbank's Sunset Canyon. Burbank is a city in the southeastern end of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, California, United States. Located 7 miles (11 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, Burbank has a population of 107,337. [8] The city was named after David Burbank, who established a sheep ranch there in 1867.
The area owes its name to developer-philanthropist George Allan Hancock, who subdivided the property in the 1920s. [3] [4] The Hancock family donated the land for the park proper in 1916 in order to preserve the tar pits; at the time the "Santa Monica electric line" was the major means of access. [5]
