The present-day Port of Pensacola occupies approximately 50 acres of landfill at the southern terminus of Barracks Street in downtown Pensacola, on the site of the former Commendencia Street and Tarragona Street wharves. The Port has eight 33' deep draft berths, 265,000 square feet of warehouse space, and on-dock rail service.
Pensacola was first settled by the Spanish Empire in 1559, antedating the establishment of St. Augustine by six years, [8] but was abandoned due to a significant hurricane and not re-established until 1698. [9] Pensacola is a seaport on Pensacola Bay, which is protected by the barrier island of Santa Rosa and connects to the Gulf of Mexico.

Pensacola Bay is a bay located in the northwestern part of Florida, United States, known as the Florida Panhandle. The bay, an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico , is located in Escambia County and Santa Rosa County , adjacent to the city of Pensacola, Florida , and is about 13 miles (21 km) long and 2.5 miles (4 km) wide.
The area was rebuilt, but it was ravaged by hurricanes in 1752 and 1761. Population growth remained modest during this period, which was characterized by Spanish missionary work with Indians and the development of Pensacola as an important port and military outpost. Conflict with French and British interests was common.

The landward facing walls of the fort, containing the Sally Port, were known as the gorge. The large rooms on the ends of the gorge were also powder magazines, and each of them were 17 x 35 feet in area. The Sally Port was 12 feet wide. [3] The gorge was designed to have 6 casemates- 3 on either face- to be used as quarters.
