Trillium erectum is a perennial, herbaceous, flowering plant that persists by means of an underground rhizome.Like all trilliums, it has a whorl of three bracts (leaves) and a single trimerous flower with three sepals, three petals, two whorls of three stamens each, and three carpels (fused into a single ovary with three stigmas).
Trillium, the Erectum group, is a group of pedicellate-flowered trilliums that includes Trillium erectum. The subgenus was circumscribed as a clade of fourteen (14) species in 2022. [ 38 ] Species in this subgenus have pedicellate flowers (on a stalk) with three distinct stigmas (no style ) and solid green leaves (not mottled).
Trillium sulcatum was described and named by Thomas Stewart Patrick in 1984. [2] Its type specimen was collected in Grundy County, Tennessee in 1980. [10] As of March 2023, the name Trillium sulcatum T.S.Patrick is widely recognized. [3] [5] [11] The species is a member of the Erectum group, a group of species typified by Trillium erectum. [12]
Trillium grandiflorum was first described by André Michaux in 1803 as variety grandiflorum of Trillium rhomboideum, [11] a species now regarded as a synonym of Trillium erectum var. erectum. [12] Michaux described the variety as having broadly rhombic leaves, large white petals, and black fruit. [13]

Trillium vaseyi is a species of flowering plant in the family Melanthiaceae. It is a spring-flowering perennial plant found only in the southeastern United States. The specific epithet vaseyi honors the American plant collector George Richard Vasey, not to be confused with his father George S. Vasey. The species is commonly called Vasey's Trillium.
