Every digital clock I've ever seen, including embedded systems, follows this de facto convention. If you need to set a clock or alarm to 12:00 on a 12-hour digital clock or embedded system, you better know and use the de facto convention, or you'll get it wrong! And it has never been the case that we switch from am to pm or vice versa at 1:00.
