Gustave Doré, The Death of Athaliah.. Accounts of Athaliah’s life are found in 2 Kings 8:16–11:16 and 2 Chronicles 22:10–23:15 in the Hebrew Bible.According to the chroniclers, she was the daughter of king Omri of Israel; [1] however, she is usually considered to have been the daughter of King Ahab – the son of Omri – and his wife, Queen Jezebel. [2]
Ahaziah was the youngest son of king Jehoram of Judah. According to 2 Chronicles 21:16–17, his older brothers had been carried off in a Philistine and Arab raid.. Under the influence of his mother Athaliah, Ahaziah introduced forms of worship that offended the Yahwistic party.
Athaliah inherited much of her mother Jezebel's character, influencing her husband, king Jehoram, to introduce the Baal-worship into Judah (2 Kings 8:18; 2 Chronicles 2:5, 11), and her son, king Ahaziah, to maintain it (2 Kings 8:27; 2 Chronicles 22:3, "in the ways of the house of Ahab: for his mother was his counselor to do wickedly").
Jehoash (Hebrew: יְהוֹאָשׁ, Yəhōʾāš, "Yah-given"; Greek: Ιωας; Latin: Ioas), also known as Joash (in King James Version), Joas (in Douay–Rheims) or Joás (Hebrew: יוֹאָשׁ, Yōʾāš), [1] was the eighth king of Judah, and the sole surviving son of Ahaziah after the massacre of the royal family ordered by his grandmother, Athaliah.
After the death of Ahaziah, his mother, Athaliah, made herself Queen of Judah and ordered the execution of all members of the royal family that could claim the throne. However, according to 2 Kings 11:2, Jehosheba saved from the massacre her infant nephew Jehoash, Ahaziah's son and Athaliah's grandson:
Jehoiada's name does not appear in the list of the Zadokite dynasty in 1 Chronicles 5:30–40 (6:4-15 in other translations).. Josephus mentions Jehoiada as "high priest in his Jewish Antiquities Book 9, Chapter 7," [3] "How Athaliah reigned over Jerusalem for five [six] years, when Jehoiada the high priest slew her."
He was attended by Ahaziah, king of Judah, who was also his nephew, son of his sister Athaliah. Meanwhile, according to the writer of the Books of Kings, the prophet Elisha ordered one of his students to go to Ramoth-Gilead and separate Jehu, a military commander at the time, from his companions.
Jezebel's son Ahaziah inherited the throne, but died as the result of an accident and was succeeded by his brother, Jehoram. Jehu later usurped the throne [ 12 ] and killed Jehoram, and his nephew Ahaziah , who was the son of Jehoram's possible sister Athaliah and her Judahite husband Jehoram .
