The 400 cu in (6.6 L) B engine was introduced in 1972 to replace the venerable 383, and were power-rated via the net (installed) method. Chrysler increased the bore size of the 383 to create the 400. Its bore of 4.342-inch (110.3 mm) was the largest used in any production Chrysler V8 at the date of its introduction.
The cast aluminum valve cover featured 15 bolts, the industry's most, to achieve a positive seal. [26] The new engine, which was introduced in 1986 for the 1987 model year, was a further evolution of AMC's 258 six. [27] [28] It had a 3.875 in (98.4 mm) bore and a 3.414 in (86.7 mm) stroke giving it a displacement of 241.6 cu in (4.0 L). [29]
Valve covers were die-cast magnesium (AZ91D alloy), rather than stamped steel; this lowered noise levels and made for better gasket sealing. Chrysler developed its first experimental hemi engine for the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft. The XIV-2220 was an inverted V16 rated at 2,500 hp (1,860 kW). The P-47 was already in production with a Pratt & Whitney radial engine when the XIV-2220 flew successfully in trials in 1945 as a possible upgrade, but the war was winding down and it did not go into production.
Chrysler hoped to have the ball-stud in production sometime between 1971 and 1973. [4] In testing, it proved able to outperform the single four-barrel carburetted A134 440, and lagged behind the eight-barrel A102 426 Street Hemi. [7] About one year of development was put in before the project was stopped, in late 1969. [4]
A rocker cover, (UK), or valve cover (elsewhere) is a cover that encloses the rocker arm in an internal combustion engine, bolting with a gasket seal to the engine head. Engines with more than one head (such as a V8 ) will have multiple rocker covers.
1963 Dodge 440 4-Door Sedan 1964 Dodge 440 4-door Station Wagon (with after-market wheels). From 1963 the 440 was separated from the new, smaller Dart range. [2] It now featured a 119-inch wheelbase shared with the 330 and Polara and available as a 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan, 2-door hardtop and 4-door station wagon.
With a 10.0:1 compression ratio, premium fuel, a 4-barrel carb and dual exhausts, the 440 cubic inch V8 produced 350 HP and was the top power option for the Town & Country. Also available for the first time on all large Chryslers were front disc brakes, which required 15-inch wheels with unique wheel covers.
