Saint Charles (commonly abbreviated St. Charles) is a city in, and the county seat of, St. Charles County, Missouri, United States. [2] The population was 70,493 at the 2020 census, making St. Charles the ninth-most populous city in Missouri. Situated on the Missouri River, St. Charles is a northwestern suburb of St. Louis.

In 1996, the district was further increased by 9 acres (3.6 ha) to include 41 more contributing buildings on the 100, 200, and 300 blocks of N. Main Street. These include Greek Revival, Italianate , and late 19th and 20th Century Revivals architecture, including work designed by architects Albert B. Groves and Frank and Adolph Haverkamp .
The district includes an industrial complex associated with the St. Charles Car Company, founded in 1873, and later known as the American Car and Foundry Company. [2] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. [1]
