Blue Knob was thought to be the highest mountain in Pennsylvania until 1921, when the U.S. Geological Survey determined a summit of 3,213 feet (979 m) was higher (later named Mount Davis). In the 1950s the summit was cleared of vegetation and was the location of Claysburg Air Force Station until it was deactivated in 1961.

Pavia Township is located in the northwestern corner of Bedford County, bordered to the west by Cambria County and to the north by Blair County.A large portion of the township is occupied by Blue Knob State Park, including the 3,130-foot (950 m) summit of Blue Knob, the second highest peak in Pennsylvania.
Herman Point is a satellite of Blue Knob mountain in Pennsylvania and one of the few summits in the state which exceed 3,000 feet (914 m) feet. This summit is located in the Blue Knob State Park and serves as the trailhead for the "Lost Turkey Trail". Herman Point is also the site of FAA towers and the old fire lookout which has since been removed.
