The Enterprise was designed by Jack Holt in 1956 for The News Chronicle during the post-war sailing boom, becoming the first UK sailing dinghy to be sponsored by a national newspaper (followed in due course by the Mirror Dinghy, also designed by Jack Holt).

The Enterprise World Championship is an international sailing regatta for the Enterprise (dinghy) class, organized by the host club on behalf of the International Enterprise Class Association and recognized by World Sailing, the sports IOC recognized governing body.
More modern dinghies like the Phil Morrison designed RS200, RS400, RS800 and RS Vareo Dinghies, the Musto Skiff, Splash and RS600 have also increased dinghy sailing participation around the UK. Two popular dinghies used in high school and college racing are the 420 and Flying Junior.
Between 1944 and 2005, these three designers have designed 28 out of the 110 active dinghy classes listed by the Yachts and Yachting Magazine in the UK at the beginning of 2005, including the Cadet, Mirror, GP14 and Enterprise (Holt), Wayfarer Wanderer and Topper (Proctor), and nine of the Laser and Racing Sailboat ranges (Morrison). Jack Holt, OBE (8 April 1912 – 14 November 1995) was a prolific designer of sailing dinghies.His pioneering designs of dinghies using plywood did much to popularise the sport of sailing in the period immediately following World War II.
