Sri Lanka had no television services available until 1979. The creation of a national television service was planned several times as far back as 1965 (Ceylon at the time), when then-Minister of State J. R. Jayawardene suggested its creation, but was rejected by Dudley Senanayake's government, whose media advisors led by Neville Jayaweera called television "a gift of a rhinoceros".
Until 2008, Tamil programming aired under the Channel Eye brand, which eventually gave way to Nethra TV. The new arrangement started on 5 January 2008, which meant that, outside of certain occasions where live sporting events were to be carried, Channel Eye was now broadcasting from 9pm to the frequency's end of transmission.

Sri Lanka's second state-owned TV station - Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) - was established by the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Act No. 6 of 1982. [3] SLRC started broadcasting on 15 February 1982. [2] The Act required the SLRC to maintain taste and decency and not to incite crime and disorder or cause religious or public offence.
Nethra TV (Tamil: நேத்ரா TV) is an terrestrial (free-to-air) television channel in Sri Lanka operated by the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation. A Tamil-language channel, the channel is based in Colombo. [2] Nethra TV's unit is also responsible for the production of Rupavahini's Muslim programming. [3]
Ahead of the start of ITN there were decisions facing the deployment of television in Sri Lanka. Japanese company NEC provided basic support for the building of the station (and did the same later with Rupavahini in 1982). The development of the station happened at the same time as Rupavahini's. One of the key steps was selecting the colour system.
