The northern unit, acquired between 1971 and 1982, was previously an Illinois National Guard training facility known as Camp Logan, Illinois. During the American Civil War, Camp Logan was a Union prisoner of war camp. In 1958, the Illinois Beach Hotel was opened within the park. [5]
In 1965, the Illinois General Assembly named the area after William W. Powers. [1] Powers had been a Chicago alderman on the Chicago City Council and Illinois General Assembly legislator in the 1920s, and used the site for picnics to feed the needy during the Great Depression. [3] The park also has a military history.
The park district's Calumet Park, [32] which is not to be confused with the nearby city of Calumet Park, IL, has a mile of lakefront and contains three beaches located at the 9600, 9800 and 9900 South blocks along Lake Michigan (what would be 96th, 98th and 99th streets).
