Mindoro is the seventh largest and eighth-most populous island in the Philippines. With a total land area of 10,571 km 2 ( 4,082 sq.mi ), it has a population of 1,408,454, as of the 2020 census. It is located off the southwestern coast of Luzon and northeast of Palawan. Mindoro is divided into two provinces: Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro.

San Jose, officially the Municipality of San Jose (Tagalog: Bayan ng San Jose), is a municipality in the province of Occidental Mindoro, Philippines.According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 153,267, [3] representing a third of the provincial population, and is the largest among cities (excluding Puerto Princesa City) and municipalities in the Mimaropa region.
Magsaysay, one of the eleven municipalities in the Occidental Mindoro, lies on the southernmost part of Mindoro Island, and is adjacent to the municipality of San Jose on the north; on the east separated by chain of valleys and mountains in the municipality of Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro; on the south, by Garza Island; and on the west by Iling Island.
Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro were formalized as provinces after the war on November 15, 1950. The population of Mindoro boomed as residents arrived from elsewhere, and the forests were cut from surrounding areas. Communal irrigation systems were built for ricefields. The indigenous Tau-Buhid or Batangan tribe relocated to the mountains.
On June 13, 1950, the government approved Republic Act 505 dividing Mindoro into two new provinces: Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro. The new province of Occidental Mindoro comprised the municipalities of Abra de Ilog, Looc, Lubang, Mamburao (now the capital of Occidental Mindoro), Paluan, Sablayan, San José and Santa Cruz.
