Schiele lived there with his muse and later partner Wally Neuzil in May to December 1910, and in May and June 1911. He had to leave because of his relationship to Wally, and due to reports about painting young nude models. He returned for short visits, then staying in guest houses. [2] He completed, signed and dated Dämmernde Stadt in 1913. [1]

The circumstances under which they met are unknown, although it has been suggested that they were introduced by Klimt, of whom Schiele was a protégé and Neuzil was a model. [2]
The model for the woman is not Schiele's wife, Edith (née Harms), and may instead be his former lover Wally Neuzil. Edith was expecting their first child at the time of painting, and at a later point Schiele overpainted a bouquet of flowers that had been placed between the woman's legs with a child wrapped a blanket, modelled by his nephew Toni.
