Hoffmann's two-toed sloth climbing in a cage at Ueno Zoo (video) The Hoffmann's two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni), also known as the northern two-toed sloth, is a species of sloth from Central and South America. It is a solitary, largely nocturnal and arboreal animal, found in mature and secondary rainforests and deciduous forests.
A two-toed (Hoffmann's) sloth. The Sloth Institute Costa Rica is a small, not-for-profit organization based in Manuel Antonio, close to Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica, dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sloths. It often takes in orphaned or injured sloths, which require care.
Although the term "two-fingered" sloth is arguably less misleading, the shorter "two-toed" is much more widely used. [ note 1 ] Members of Choloepus are larger than three-toed sloths, having a body length of 58 to 70 centimetres (23 to 28 in), and weighing 4 to 8 kilograms (8.8 to 17.6 lb).
A morphological tree of Megalonychidae, based on the work of Stinnesbeck and colleagues (2021). [15] ( Note that this tree does not conform to genetic studies, as it includes the Caribbean sloths Neocnus, Parocnus Megalocnus and Arcatocnus which have been placed in the separate family Megalocnidae, well as the two toed sloths (Choloepus), which are placed in the clade Mylodontoidea).
The brown-throated sloth is of similar size and build to most other species of three-toed sloths, with both males and females being 42 to 80 cm (17 to 31 in) in total body length. The tail is relatively short, only 2.5 to 9 cm (1.0 to 3.5 in) long.
Karl Hoffmann (7 December 1823 – 11 May 1859) was a German physician and naturalist. Hoffmann was born in Stettin , Kingdom of Prussia and studied at Berlin University. In 1853 he travelled to Costa Rica with Alexander von Frantzius to collect natural history specimens.
The game is a rare example of a non trivial game of that kind where optimal strategies can be explicitly found. In addition to military strategy applications, the Colonel Blotto game has applications to political strategy (resource allocations across political battlefields), network defense, R&D patent races, and strategic hiring decisions.
Understanding of sloth phylogeny has recently been greatly revised by molecular studies, based on collagen [3] and mitochondrial DNA [2] sequences. These investigations consistently place three-toed sloths within Megatherioidea, close to Megalonyx , megatheriids and nothrotheriids , and two-toed sloths close to mylodontids , while moving the ...
