Sigma Tau Delta was founded on December 12, 1922 as the English Club of Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota. A group of professors developed a national constitution and ritual in preparation for expansion as a national organization, with Fadner contributing the Ritual and Owen the original constitution.

The poem would later be attributed to Bro. Sidney P. Brown and quickly became a staple within the fraternity. When speaking about the poem in 1981, Brown cited his experiences with Beta (Washington, D.C.), Theta (Chicago), Xi Lambda (Chicago Alumni), and Eta Lambda (Atlanta Alumni) as collective inspirations for the poem. Each year, National Alpha Lambda Delta awards over $211,000 in scholarships and fellowships to members. Undergraduate members may also be awarded the Jo Anne Trow Scholarship; 50 scholarships are given annually. The James G. Pi Kappa Lambda was established on May 17, 1918, at the Northwestern University by faculty members Carl Milton Beecher, Louis Norton Dodge, and Walter Allen Stults. [1] The first member was Peter Christian Lutkin, dean of the School of Music at Northwestern University, and the Greek letters chosen for the name of the society were based on his initials.
