Archery has been included in the Summer Youth Olympics since their inauguration. As with archery at the Summer Olympics, only the recurve is competed. Unlike the Summer Olympic competition, a mixed team event is competed, in which competitors are paired across national boundaries to create evenly matched multinational teams, as part of the Youth Olympic Games' spirit of cooperation.
As hosts, China was given the maximum quota, however they declined the spot for the boys' event and thus the spot was reallocated to the next best nation at the 2013 World Archery Youth Championships. A further 8 spots, 4 in each gender was to be decided by the Tripartite Commission, but only 5 were given.
The boys' individual archery competition at the 2014 Youth Summer Olympics took place from 22–26 August in Nanjing, China.. 32 archers from 32 countries entered the competition, which consisted of a 72-arrow 60m ranking round followed by a knockout tournament based on the Olympic scoring system, with the archers seeded according to their ranking round score.

Archery at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics was held 12–17 October 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The total of 64 athletes participated in the tournament. The archery competition took place at Parque Sarmiento (previously planned at Parque Polideportivo Roca in Villa Soldati ).
