Cullman is the largest city and county seat of Cullman County, Alabama, United States. It is located along Interstate 65 , about 50 miles (80 km) north of Birmingham and about 55 miles (89 km) south of Huntsville .
Electric power is provided primarily by Southern Company-subsidiary, Alabama Power. However, some of the surrounding area such as Bessemer and Cullman are provided by TVA. Bessemer also operates its own water and sewer system. [102] Natural gas is provided by Spire, although some metro area cities operate their own natural gas services.
The Cullman Times is the successor to the Cullman Democrat (1901), the Cullman Banner (1937), and the Cullman Times Democrat (1954). [1] Hollinger sold the newspaper in 1998 to CNHI, LLC. [2] In April 2020, The North Jefferson News of nearby Gardendale was merged with The Cullman Times by CNHI as part of a chain-wide downsizing. [3]
Lauderdale County was named in honor of Col. James Lauderdale [4] who was born in Virginia in about 1780. In the early 19th century, Lauderdale, who moved to West Tennessee, became a major in General John Coffee's cavalry of volunteers.
