Klaipėda (/ ˈ k l eɪ p ɛ d ə / CLAY-ped-ə; Lithuanian: [ˈklˠɐɪ̯ˑpʲeːdˠɐ] ⓘ) is a city in Lithuania on the Baltic Sea coast. [4] It is the third largest city in Lithuania, the fifth largest city in the Baltic States and the capital of Klaipėda County, as well as the only major seaport in the country - the Port of Klaipėda which is also the busiest port in the Baltic States.
Importantly, the annexation gave Lithuania control of a year-round, ice-free Baltic port. Lithuania made full use of Klaipėda's port, modernizing and adapting it largely for its agricultural exports. The port reconstruction was certainly one of the larger long-term investment projects enacted by the government of Lithuania in the interwar period.
The loss of its only port to the Baltic Sea was a major blow to the Lithuanian economy. Between 70% and 80% of foreign trade passed through Klaipėda. [7] The region, which represented only about 5% of Lithuania's territory, contained a third of its industry. [7] Lithuania also lost its heavy investments in the port's infrastructure.
