Namdaemun Market (Korean: 남대문시장) is a large traditional market in Seoul, South Korea. It is located next to Namdaemun , the main southern gate to the old city. [ 1 ] The market is among the oldest extant markets in Korea, having opened during the Joseon period in 1414.
The structure was rebuilt in 1447, during the 29th year of King Sejong the Great's reign, [6] and has been renovated several times since. [5] It was originally one of three main gates, the others being Dongdaemun (East Gate) and the now-demolished Seodaemun (West Gate) in the Seodaemun District. [7] It is the location of the Battle of Namdaemun.
