Occoneechee State Park is a state park near Clarksville, Virginia, located along Buggs Island Lake.Occoneechee State Park is 2,698 acres in size. Its name reflects the Occaneechi Indians, who lived on (and traded from) an island in the Roanoke River near its confluence with the Dan River, which was flooded by the creation of the Kerr Lake reservoir in 1952.
The Virginia state record blue catfish, which weighed 143 pounds (65 kg), was caught at Buggs Island Lake on June 18, 2011 by angler Richard Nicholas "Nick" Alexander. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] It is also the International Game Fish Association 50-pound (23 kg) test and all-tackle world record. [ 5 ]
During early construction, the project was called Buggs Island Lake after a downstream island which was named after Samuel Bugg, an 18th-century early pioneer. This is a list of lakes in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. Virginia has two natural lakes, and several man-made lakes and reservoirs. [ 1 ] Swimming, fishing, and/or boating are permitted in some of these lakes, but not all.
The town is located on Kerr Lake, which is also known as Buggs Island Lake. The 50,000-acre (202 km 2) lake is popular for boating and fishing; especially for catfish and many varieties of freshwater bass including largemouth bass, striped bass and crappie. The Virginia Lake Festival is held annually at Clarksville during the third weekend of July.
