The Brownsville Female Seminary was founded in 1842 by Presbyterian settlers. [49] The Brownsville Baptist Female College was established in 1850 by the Tennessee Baptist Convention and opened in 1851. This was the only one of 18 colleges within a 60 mile radius of Brownsville to survive the Civil War.
