National Sewing Machine Company was a Belvidere, Illinois-based manufacturer founded in the late 19th century, [1] operating until 1957. The company manufactured sewing machines, washing machines, bicycles, an automobile, home workshop machinery, and cast-iron toys and novelties (under the Vindex Toy Company label).
Allen B. Wilson's main achievements were in the area of inventing and improving sewing machines. Two of his inventions in this field were of particular importance in this regard: the rotary hook and the four-motion feed. He claims to have conceived the idea of a sewing machine in 1847.

In 1876,the White Sewing Machine Company developed a machine around the vibrating shuttle which became the company's flagship product—so much so that it was originally named the "White Sewing Machine", only later taking the name "White Vibrating Shuttle" when a rotary hook model was added to the product line.
