The best .308/7.62 NATO rifle that I've ever owned/carried was an M1A rifle. Get a decent scope mounted on it, zero it to your eyesight, ammo and rifle and you're golden for 800 meters with no major problem at all. I used the XM-21 version in Viet Nam as a sniper rifle and it WILL do the job.

And the Cetme 308 accepts large capacity magazines, while the 750 does not. I already have a remington model 700 bolt action rifle in 280/7mm express, and a marlin 336 in 30-30. DPMS makes a AR-15 / AR-10 style rifle in 308, but the prices I have seen put it over $1,000. There is the saiga in 308, but I dont know how the accuracy is.

The Mosin is not .308, but its caliber is very similar. Also can be had for cheapish still. Probably the best hog gun out there. Accuracy is good enough not not a sniper rifle. You may dislocate your shoulder on the first round, but its okay, just shoot another to relocate it. : Marlin is always a safe bet. A used Remington 700 might fit your ...

  10. Looking for a Main Battle Rifle in .308 for under $1000

    www.survivalistboards.com/threads/looking-for-a-main-battle-rifle-in-308-for...

The reason I want it in .308 is that I know the caliber and shoot it often (at least once a month) in my Remington 700VS. Plus the .308 I feel confident will put someone in their place should it come to that. I know that there are some good rifles in .308 for the "preservation of liberty" like the FN FAL, the M14, the AR10, etc.

The M1A is a great rifle, no question, but it doesn't fit the parameters I'm trying work in. Maybe I'm kidding myself, but of the many platforms out there in 7.62 x 51/.308, the H&K 91s (and the many clones) are still my primary focus.
