EOS is a medical imaging system designed to provide frontal and lateral radiography images, while limiting the X-ray dose absorbed by the patient in a sitting or standing position. The system relies on the high sensitivity of a detector ( multi-wire chamber ) invented by Georges Charpak , which earned him the 1992 Nobel prize .
Scottie dog sign is a radiological sign which refers to the appearance of lumbar spine in oblique view X-ray. [1] In the X-ray, the spine can be visualised as the lateral view of a Scottie dog, [2] with the pedicle as the eye, the transverse process as the nose, the superior articular facet as the ear and the inferior articular facet as the front leg, spinous process as the body.
EOS imaging is a medical device company based in Paris, France, that designs, develops, and markets EOSedge and the EOS system, innovative, orthopedic medical imaging systems, associated with several orthopedic solutions along the patient care pathway – from diagnosis to post-operative treatments.
Historically the procedure involved the injection of a radiocontrast agent into the cervical or lumbar spine, followed by several X-ray projections. Today, myelography has largely been replaced by the use of MRI scans , although the technique is still sometimes used under certain circumstances – though now usually in conjunction with CT ...
In some, the x-ray findings may correspond to symptoms of back stiffness with flexion/extension or with mild back pain. [2] Back pain or stiffness may be worse in the morning. [4] Rarely, large anterior cervical spine osteophytes may affect the esophagus or the larynx and cause pain, difficulty swallowing [5] [6] or even dyspnea. [7]
X-rays are performed followed by a CT scan of the spine to help see narrowing of the spinal canal. This is a very effective study in cases of lateral recess stenosis. It is also necessary for patients in which MRI is contraindicated, such as those with implanted pacemakers. [citation needed]
Image-guided surgery has been applied to procedures involving on multiple organs such as the brain, spine, pelvis/hip, knee, lung, breast, liver, and prostate. [ 7 ] Part of the wider field of computer-assisted surgery , image-guided surgery can take place in hybrid operating rooms using intraoperative imaging.
US guidelines, on the other hand, recommend CT in all cases where medical imaging is indicated, and that X-ray is only acceptable where CT is not readily available. [7] Magnetic resonance imaging may be useful if it is necessary to exclude a ligament injury. [8] The indication for MR spine is a focal neurological deficit.
