On June 27, 1995, the designation of the section east of US 377 to SH 121 was transferred to Urban Road 1171 (UR 1171). On December 18, 2003, the eastern portion, from I-35E to the former route of SH 121 (now Business SH 121), was removed from the state highway system at the request of the City of Lewisville. [ 5 ]
[14] [15] In the early 1980s, construction began to widen MD 404 to a divided highway. [16] By 1985, construction was underway for the four-lane divided bypass of Denton between MD 404 west of Denton and MD 313 north of Denton. [17] In 1987, MD 313 and MD 404 were rerouted to bypass Denton along the newly completed four-lane divided bypass.
After World War II, construction began to fill the 5-mile (8.0 km) gap between the eastern end of MD 328 and the western end of MD 457. [10] The new bridge over Tuckahoe Creek and the remainder of the highway were completed in 1947 and by 1948 the MD 328 designation was applied to the whole highway from Easton to Denton.
The current designation of FM 407 has existed since May 23, 1951; the original routing was solely in Denton County, from FM 156 in Justin westward 2.6 mi (4.2 km). The route was extended to the Wise County line on August 20, 1952, and into Wise County to an intersection with US 81 on October 29, 1953.

The route intersects many major roads, including MD 54 in Mardela Springs, MD 404 in the Denton area, MD 302 in Barclay, MD 300 in Sudlersville, and US 301 near Massey. The designation MD 313 was first used in 1927 for the road running from Eldorado to Galena, while the portion south to Mardela Springs was designated a part of US 213 .
